The Reality I Faced as Someone Struggling with Listening: Language Learning Is a Battle of Money

Recently, I started using study materials because I began to feel that listening might be my biggest weakness.
However, language learning materials are very expensive.

On top of that, I discovered that in another language I’ve started learning, the way you position your mouth and tongue for pronunciation isn’t fixed.

When I finally found a teacher and asked how I should study, I was told,
“The only way is to practice shadowing three times a week using the teacher’s audio as a model, while checking your pronunciation and getting used to it.”

I see. The definition of sounds in this language is quite ambiguous.
No wonder the subtitles in online videos are often full of mistakes.

Even in this age of advanced AI, this language still requires human expertise to produce subtitles at a certain level of accuracy.
In other words, I am challenging a language that relies heavily on human senses.

For now, it would be enough if I could understand conversations among my coworkers.
I can’t yet imagine a day when I’ll be able to actively speak this language myself.

Still, if I can understand what my coworkers—who don’t speak English—are saying, my mental burden should become lighter.

For some reason, being surrounded by a language I don’t understand is more mentally exhausting than I expected.

Then there’s the lesson fee: 5,000 yen per month.
Since I also started using English listening materials, any additional expense feels overwhelming.

So, I decided to cancel my illustration editing apps and several subscription services.

Even that wasn’t enough, and I ended up reducing the amount I set aside for savings.
Language learning is also a battle against expenses.

Today, I found myself remembering what a friend once said:
“Learning a language takes both time and money—it’s really tough.”

リスニングが苦手な私が気づいた現実｜語学学習はお金との戦いだった

最近、リスニングが自分の一番のネックなのではないかと思い、教材を使い始めた。
しかし、語学教材というのはとても高い。

そのうえ、もう一つ始めた言語について、発音時の口の開け方や舌の位置が一定ではないことが分かった。

やっと見つけた先生に勉強法を尋ねたところ、
「毎週3回、先生の音声をお手本にシャドーイングを行い、その上で発音をチェックしながら慣れていくしかない」と言われた。

なるほど。この言語の音の定義はかなり曖昧らしい。
道理で、ネット上の動画の字幕が間違いだらけなわけだ。

AIが発達した現代でも、この言語は習熟した人間を介さないと、一定レベルの字幕を作ることができない。
つまり私は、人間の五感に頼らざるを得ない言語に挑戦しているということだ。

まずは、職場の人たちの会話が聞き取れるようになれば十分だろう。
自分からこの言語で会話できる日が来るとは、まだ想像できない。

しかし、英語の通じない職場の外国人たちが何を話しているのか理解できれば、精神的な負担は軽くなるはずだ。

なぜなら、自分の分からない言語が周囲で飛び交っている状態というのは、想像以上にストレスがかかるからだ。

問題はレッスン料だ。月に5,000円。
英語のリスニング教材も始めた私にとって、これ以上の出費は正直きつい。

そこで、イラストの編集アプリや、いくつかの定額サービスを思い切って解約した。

それでも足りず、結局は貯蓄に回す金額を減らすことになった。
語学とは、出費との戦いでもある。

ふと、友達の「語学って、お金も時間もかかって大変だよね」という言葉を思い出した、そんな一日だった。
