In Japan, Christmas means cake and Kentucky Fried Chicken!
At my house, KFC is a bit pricey, so this year, as usual, we made a “homemade KFC-style fried chicken” using a recipe I found online 🍗
When I was little, we almost always made our Christmas cake from scratch.
Sometimes we went all out and baked the sponge cake ourselves, while other years we just made a denser base in the rice cooker and topped it with whipped cream.
Our cakes ranged from classic strawberry shortcake to the occasional Bûche de Noël.
Looking back, maybe I just wanted to show my love by making something special for my family—it was my little way of expressing myself.
As an adult, I’ve come to realize that while making things from scratch brings joy, there’s also something wonderful about spending money on delicious sweets and meals you can’t recreate at home.
I’m still in my late 20s, and I haven’t had the courage to splurge on desserts or dishes that cost over 10,000 yen just yet…
But one manga I’ve been following for years—Black Night Parade—often releases a new digital volume in December, so it always gets me in the Christmas mood 🎄📚
Last year, I kept eyeing Lawson’s Christmas cake but never made a move… and before I knew it, New Year had come.
But this year, I finally bought it!
A 4-inch strawberry shortcake from Lawson for 3,990 yen (tax included) 🍰✨
There’s just something magical about opening a cake box!
My mom and I hesitantly took the first bite, and wow—the fluffy sponge and fresh whipped cream just melted in our mouths.
“This can’t be a convenience store cake!” we both exclaimed.
No wonder local cake shops are having a tough time…
Honestly, with how light and tasty it was, I think I could’ve polished off the whole 4-inch cake by myself in just two days.
If I’d grown up eating cake this good, I probably would’ve dreamed of finishing an entire Christmas cake solo once I became an adult 😆
By the way, last year after Christmas, small non-reserved cakes were sold at a steep discount.
But this year, Lawson seemed to manage their stock better—at my local store, there weren’t even leftovers.
In fact, even after Christmas, they were selling them at full price or maybe with just a 50 yen discount.
I had trouble deciding between the pistachio and berry flavors, but in the end, I went with berry.
Still… I have to say, last year’s cake was tastier.
Maybe my taste buds got spoiled by Lawson’s pre-order cake, or maybe the one I picked this time was more affordable and less rich.
“Deliciousness is a dangerous thing,” I thought, as we put away the Christmas tree and stepped into New Year’s Eve.
I found myself wondering, “How many more years until I can read English books effortlessly…?”
日本のクリスマスといえば、ケーキとケンタッキー！
我が家ではケンタッキーはちょっと高いから、今年もネットのレシピを参考に「なんちゃってケンタッキー・フライド・チキン」を手作りしたよ🍗
ケーキは、幼い頃は毎年のように手作りしてたなぁ。
本格的にスポンジから焼く年もあれば、炊飯器で作った固めの土台にホイップクリームをのせて仕上げることもあった。
定番のイチゴショートだけじゃなくて、ブッシュドノエルを作った年もあったな〜。
今思えば、「時間をかけて作ったケーキを家族に食べてもらいたい！」っていう、幼い私なりの自己主張だったのかも。
大人になると、手作りの喜びよりも、お金をかけて美味しいものを買って食べる楽しさに気づいてしまうよね。
私はまだ20代後半だけど、1万円を超えるようなお菓子や料理にはまだ手を出せない…！
でも、長年読んでいる漫画『ブラックナイトパレード』が、12月に電子書籍で更新されることが多くて、なんとなくこの時期になると読みたくなるんだよね📕✨
結局、去年はローソンのクリスマスケーキが気になりつつも迷っているうちに年が明けちゃったけど、今年はついに買ったよ！

ケーキを開ける瞬間って、やっぱりワクワクする🎉
母と一緒に恐る恐るフォークを入れて一口食べた瞬間、ふわっふわのスポンジとフレッシュな生クリームが口いっぱいに広がって…！
「これ、コンビニレベルじゃないじゃん…！」って驚いた。
なるほど、町のケーキ屋さんが苦戦するわけだなぁ、ってちょっと納得。
正直、4号サイズなら女性一人でも2日でペロッと食べられちゃう軽さと美味しさ。
もし子どもの頃からこんな美味しいケーキを食べてたら、将来「ホールケーキ一人で食べる」って夢を抱いてしまうかも（笑）
ちなみに去年は、クリスマス後に予約不要の小さいケーキが割引されてたけど、今年はローソンが在庫調整してたのか、近所では売れ残りすら見かけなかったな〜。
むしろ、12月26日以降も値引きナシか、せいぜい50円引きくらいで追加販売されてた。
ピスタチオ味とベリー味で迷って、結局ベリーを買ったんだけど…正直、去年のケーキの方が美味しかったかも？
もしかして、私の舌がローソンの予約ケーキで贅沢になっちゃったのか、それとも今年のは価格を抑えた分、ちょっとライトだったのか…。
「美味しいって罪だわぁ」って思いながら、無事にクリスマスツリーも片付けて、気づけば今日は大晦日。
ふと、「あと何年で英語の本をスラスラ読めるようになるんだろう…」なんて、ぼんやり思うのでした📚
